William Henry Gleason was born in 1829. He was sent by the War Department in 1865 to evaluate Florida as a colony for newly freed slaves. He liked the area so much he purchased 16,000 acres at $1.25 an acre. He founded the city of Eau Gallie, Florida shortly after, and moved his family here which included his wife, Sara G., and sons William H. H. Gleason and George G. Gleason. The sons formed a land development company called Gleason Brothers and Company.
